More from SAINT JAMES
Saint James has been the nautical sweater specialist for over 150 years, drawing inspiration from the sea facing, windswept land of sailors sandwiched between Normandy and Brittany and a stone’s throw from Mont Saint-Michel.To this day, still located in the small village of Saint James, the company stays true to its roots. Their iconic, timeless basics can be worn by tiny tots right through to the older generation. The historic French label is best known for pioneering the iconic Breton striped sweater, originally intended for fishermen and then adopted by sailors and yachtsmen. They began knitting the famous sailor sweater in the 19th century. This sweater made from wool was so tightly knit that it was regarded as a ‘second skin’, considered to be waterproof and perfect for sailors when fishing in the freezing cold seas of the North Atlantic. It takes at least 23 kilometers of thread and 18 manufacturing steps to make a Saint James sailor sweater. In total, over 18 seamstresses will have been involved in cutting, making, quality controlling and ironing the final item.Other timeless essentials are the authentic striped sailor jerseys, originally worn as part of the official uniform in the French navy. Made in the Saint-James workshops, in high-quality cotton with a boat neck and the iconic nautical stripes.
